Jyväskylä is the birthplace of Finnish-language Teacher Education. Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary was founded in 1863 followed by the teacher training school in 1866 which is the ancestor of the current University of Jyväskylä Teacher Training School primary school. The secondary and general upper secondary school was established 50 years later, in 1915.
Nowadays, the University of Jyväskylä Teacher Training School operates as part of the University of Jyväskylä, Faculty of Education and Psychology. Total of staff members is 119 including 1 + 3 school heads, 97 teachers, 3 school counsellors and 15 other personnel. The school operates on two campuses, Primary school with 400 pupils aged 7 to 12 in Pitkäkatu 8 and Secondary school with 350 pupils aged 13 to 15 and General upper secondary school with 300 students aged 16 to 20 in Yliopistonkatu 1. The school integrates teaching, research, and pedagogical innovation and provides an authentic context for student teachers to do their teaching practices. Each year, there are altogether 370 primary school students, 420 subject teacher students and 50 special needs education teacher students and guidance counsellors doing their teaching practices at the University of Jyväskylä Teacher Training School.

The school curricula follow the Finnish national core curriculum for basic education 2016 and the Finnish National Core Curriculum for General upper secondary education 2019. The curricula of the University of Jyväskylä Teacher training School as local curricula, complement the national core curricula with local emphasis and define school-specific practices.
In Finland, teachers have pedagogical freedom to choose the pedagogical methods. The national core curricula emphasise active involvement of pupils and students, interaction, well-being, support for learning, and meaningfulness and joy of learning. These provide guidelines for schooling.
The teacher training school has a close collaboration with the department of teacher education and other subject specific departments. The core fields of study at the teacher training school are teacher education and professional development of teachers, learning and teaching processes and subject pedagogical research. In practice, the teacher training school teachers do their own research, co-operate with other teacher training schools, department of teacher education or other subject specific departments.
