The school curricula follow the Finnish national core curriculum for basic education 2016 and the Finnish National Core Curriculum for General upper secondary education 2019. The curricula of the University of Jyväskylä Teacher training School as local curricula, complement the national core curricula with local emphasis and define school-specific practices.

In Finland, teachers have pedagogical freedom to choose the pedagogical methods. The national core curricula emphasise active involvement of pupils and students, interaction, well-being, support for learning, and meaningfulness and joy of learning. These provide guidelines for schooling.

The teacher training school has a close collaboration with the department of teacher education and other subject specific departments. The core fields of study at the teacher training school are teacher education and professional development of teachers, learning and teaching processes and subject pedagogical research. In practice, the teacher training school teachers do their own research, co-operate with other teacher training schools, department of teacher education or other subject specific departments.
